MassDOT closes Springfield bridge for emergency repairs

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — The bridge on St. James Avenue in Springfield, that crosses over an abandoned railroad track, has been closed for emergency repairs, forcing drivers to find alternate routes through the city’s McKnight neighborhood.
MassDOT closed the crossing immediately on Thursday after safety concerns were identified with the bridge deck. “The bridge will be closed for crews to make necessary repairs to the bridge deck, and is expected to remain closed through Friday evening,” the department said in a statement to Western Mass News.
The closure is creating delays for daily commuters like Jesus Cruz of Springfield, who relies on the bridge to get to work and his girlfriend’s house. “It was quite hectic. After a long workday, it takes a toll to sit in traffic for an additional 45 minutes,” he said.
Cruz said he is now leaving his house extra early in the morning to avoid being late for work. The extended commute is also hitting his wallet. “With the cost of gas nowadays, 45 minutes can run you a quarter tank. That’s about $30 out of your pocket just to sit in traffic over a delay,” he added.
Drivers who usually travel through the area are being diverted onto Albany Street, Tapley Street, and Bay Street while repairs are underway.
A nearby resident told Western Mass News off-camera that he recently noticed holes while driving over the bridge before the closure was implemented. Workers could be seen doing repair work on both sides of the closure when Western Mass News visited the site on Friday.
Cruz said he plans to avoid the area entirely until repairs are complete. “I’m hoping not to come back down this way for a couple of days just to avoid it all,” he said.
Drivers are advised to take all necessary detours to get around the area safely until repair work is complete.
