SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Governor Maura Healey took emergency action on Thursday, to get what she calls “dangerous” kratom products off store shelves across Massachusetts. The state is temporarily classifying kratom, a largely unregulated substance with opioid-like effects, as a schedule one drug.

Officials said the move is designed to protect young people from highly potent, unpredictable products easily bought at local gas stations and convenience stores.

Kratom is widely sold in smoke shops, gas stations, and convenience stores in powders, gummies, and tablets. State public health officials warn these products lack regulation, making potency unpredictable and ingredients unknown.

The emergency order places kratom on the state’s Schedule I list. It takes effect following a 14-day notice period, giving local health boards the power to seize products and stop sales. Regular kratom use can lead to physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms similar to opioids.

Western Mass News spoke with Springfield Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris who told us she applauds the state’s decision, “that is exactly what should happen at this point. It’s important that we have legislation we can implement.”

Commissioner Caulton-Harris also told Western Mass News the sale and use of kratom is a complex issue. She said the city has heard many different perspectives from those both for and against kratom and said residents broadly agree on the risk involved with these highly concentrated stimulants, “We heard from both sides, those who were in favor of keeping kratom in place, but everyone understands that 7oh which is that addictive substance that’s in some kratom products is damaging to our health.”

Later tonight on Western Mass News at 10 and 11, we’ll have more from local health experts about the risks associated with kratom and the resources available to anyone struggling with dependency or withdrawals.
